The North East School District recognizes the need to develop the unique and special abilities of each student and provides Gifted Education services for students who meet the eligibility requirements.
-
Students demonstrating outstanding aptitude or competence in academic, intellectual, or creative areas may be referred for a Gifted evaluation by the District or through a written request from the parent. The District utilizes a combination of parent input, teacher input, and assessment data to determine potential students for gifted evaluation. Parents/guardians who feel that their child may meet the PDE Chapter 16 qualifications for Gifted may submit a written letter requesting a gifted evaluation to the building principal, School Psychologist, or Director of Special Education. Requests for evaluation will be reviewed with a Multidisciplinary team to determine if an evaluation is appropriate.
-
A gifted evaluation is completed by the school psychologist. The evaluation will consist of a combination of assessments and a review of existing assessment data. After the evaluation, a team will meet to discuss the results and recommendations. If the student is found to meet the criteria for Gifted Education, the team will then develop a Gifted Individualized Education Program (GIEP).
To qualify for gifted services, a student must meet the state’s definition of mentally gifted:
Mentally gifted is defined as outstanding intellectual and creative ability the development of which requires specially designed programs or support services, or both, not ordinarily provided in the regular education program. (22 Pa. Code §16.1) Intellectual ability is not equated with an IQ score alone.
-
Every student found eligible for Gifted Education has a Gifted Individualized Education Program (GIEP). The GIEP is a strength-based document identifying goals for the year and details any additional activities or services the student may receive. The GIEP team will meet at least once a year to discuss student progress and revise the GIEP. Gifted activities and services vary by building and individual student interest and need.
All GIEPs are overseen by the school district’s Gifted Coordinator.
