What does the School Counselor do?

My main role at North East Middle School is to support all students academically, socially, and emotionally; as well as to provide opportunities for college and career exploration and education. I meet with students individually and in small groups. I also teach a guidance class to all 6th grade students. I utilize brief solution focused counseling techniques, as well as a person centered approach. Students in need of more intensive therapy services will be referred to our Student Assistance Program.

What is the Student Assistance Program?

The Student Assistance Program (SAP), is a program designed to identify and assist students who experience barriers to learning. The SAP team is comprised of teachers, administrators, school personnel, and drug & alcohol and mental health professionals. The SAP team will help students and families find services within the school, and if necessary, the community. Anyone can refer a child to the SAP team. To do so, please follow this link to the Student Assistance Referral Form.

What is Guidance Class?

Guidance Class is a “specials” class available to all students in 6th grade. The class covers a series of lessons that fall under the categories of Academic Wellness, Mental Health, and College and Career Readiness. Students participate every other day for one quarter of the school year. More detailed information can be found on the school’s curriculum page.
