District Health Services
The National Association of School Nurses defines school nursing as a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and lifelong achievement and health of students. The focus of the school health service is to provide first aid and medical care during school hours, including chronic disease management and physician prescribed treatments.
School health and nursing has gone through many changes since the pandemic. The nurse’s office can be a busy place treating illnesses, injuries, or physician prescribed treatments. Please, make sure your phone number is up to date with the school and that the nurses are aware of any health concerns. Feel free to drop by the school to talk or you can reach us by phone or email.
Over the Counter Medications approved by Standing Orders
- Analgesics Topical (Anbesol, Bactine, Biofreeze, Blistex, Burn Spray, Caladryl, Carmex, Chloraseptic, Throat Spray, Sting Swabs
- Analgesics Oral (Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Midol) Middle and High School Students only and with parental permission.
- Antibiotics Topical (Bacitracin, Neosporin)
- Antihistamine (Benadryl, Epinephrine) Dosage by age/weight with Parental notification prior to administration required except in the event of an emergency.
- Anti-inflammatory (Hydrocortisone Cream, Ibuprofen)
- Gastrointestinal (Lactose intolerance medications, Tums)
- Ophthalmic (Contact lens solution, Eye wash, Visine)
- Other (Narcan, Albuterol) Emergency administration only.
Other Daily or Prescribed Medications
If a student is under a physician’s care and required to take medication during the school day, must secure the proper form (link here). Notary Public's seal is required. This service is available in the School Administration Office and provided free of charge to families of school age children.
Medications should be encouraged to be administered at home, if possible. All A.M. doses of medications should be administered at home.
Medications must be hand delivered in their original pharmacy labeled container. Medications in plastic bags or containers other than their original pharmacy container is not acceptable. Medications will not be accepted through student’s backpacks.
Any middle or high school student who needs to carry a fast acting rescue inhaler (usually for Asthma) with them during the day, or during a school sponsored trip, should have their doctor check off the appropriate box on the Authorization for Medication at School(link) form.
Treatment plans or medication forms must be renewed for each school year.
Health Service Goals
- Appraisal of the health status of students and school personnel
- Assisting in the identification, education and healthcare of special needs students
- Counseling students, parents and staff concerning any health problem
- Preventing and controlling communicable diseases
- Encouraging the correction of remedial defects
- Providing emergency care for sudden illness and injury that occur while under the school’s jurisdiction
- Administering medications according to district policy
- Referring to and collaborating with community agencies
- Assisting in the planning for and providing health education
- Advocating for the complete health of our children
Health Services Include
- Immunization record review and maintenance
- Annual vision screening grades K-12
- Annual height/weight measurement grades K-12
- Annual hearing screening grades K, 1, 2, 3, 7, 11 and special education students
- Blood pressure checked on all students grades 6-12
- Dental exams are provided for grades K, 3, 7
- Physical exams are provided for grades K, 6, 11

Scoliosis screening done in grades 6 (if private exam is not provided) and 7

Assisting with obtaining health insurance for uninsured children through the CHIPS program
