RE: End of Year Updates

Dear North East Families:
We are excited to launch year three of our K-12 Summer Learning Lab (SLL) which is an enrichment extension for any student. The Summer Learning Lab is open to any 2022-2023 student who is currently enrolled in the North East School District; however, seats are limited. The Summer Learning Lab will run for four weeks Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. and end promptly at 12:30 p.m. beginning Monday, July 10 through Thursday, August 3, 2023. Breakfast and lunch will be provided as well as modified shuttle transportation. All K-12 programs will be held in our North East Middle School building. Please read the attached flyer to register your child(ren) or select the link:  https://forms.gle/tZus4onGFmBwiEjc6

All district policies and procedures will be implemented. If your child is attending 9-12 grade credit recovery, we will be integrating physical activity and outdoor breaks as well. We encourage our parents to reach out to the Summer Learning Lab Administrator, Mr. Timothy Skelly, at tskelly@nesd1.org, with any questions regarding SLL. The deadline to register is Thursday, June 1, 2023.

Families, as of now, the Federal Government has not approved the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) waiver for the 2023-2024 school year. Parents will be required to submit the Free & Reduced Meal online application. Please DO NOT complete before July 1, 2023, to ensure your information is applied to the new school year. Additional details will be mailed on or around the first week of July, which will contain the Federal Eligibility Income Chart and application instructions.

Chromebook return will be held on the dates listed below. Please make sure your child turns in all components
including Chromebook, cover, and power cord.

  • Tuesday, May 30th – Middle School
  • Wednesday, May 31st – HS Seniors Only
  • Thursday, June 1st – Intermediate Elementary
  • Friday, June 2nd – HS Grades 9-11

Good Afternoon Grape Picker Family, It is with a very heavy heart to inform you of the incredibly sad news of the passing of high school teacher and coach, Mr. Phil Sarver.

Mr. Sarver was an outstanding educator and was loved by all. He was passionate about his job and loved the North East community, his students, and colleagues.

Please be respectful of the family during this challenging time and, please keep the family in your prayers.

We will have counselors, the crisis team, and therapy dogs available at the high school for students and staff next week. We are working with the family and will share additional information as soon as it becomes available, including any services or vigils.

Respectfully,

Dr. Michele S. Hartzell, Superintendent
Dr. William Renne, High School Principal
Mr. Corey Garland, High School Assistant Principal

March 29, 2023

Good Afternoon,

The Superintendents just received a report from PDE as well as the IU that multiple districts in Western PA are under a "SWATTING" attack and are receiving fake reports of active shooters through 911 calls.

We have been notified that the City of Erie, Meadville, and Crawford have also received 911 SWATTING calls from the same California number. In the event a call does happen in the North East School District, we will follow all district safety protocols.

The State Police are involved and investigating. PSP, Corporal Markham, and the North East Police Department are patrolling our campus.

          Email from PDE:
Subject: Urgent!: Concerns of 911 Calls Swatting

Please be aware that it appears that Pennsylvania is in the midst of a SWATTING attack

By all reports, they are a hoax. PSP is involved at this point. PSP will be sending out a statewide
notice to law enforcement -up to 24 schools have been hoaxed, all or most from the same CA
phone number. I wanted to put this information out to you as soon as possible in case you are
also experiencing this event. PDE, Sherri S.

Again, we are aware that this is occurring and we will keep you posted on any additional updates.

Sincerely,
Dr. Michele S. Hartzell, Superintendent
